When Cardinal Domingo Varela is elected pope during the Third Vatican Council, he inherits a Church on the brink of schism. His efforts to enact sweeping reform -including ending priestly celibacy and opening the priesthood to women- spark fierce resistance from traditionalist bishops determined to stop him.
Meanwhile, in the Brazilian Amazon, a missionary priest reemerges after twenty-five years among an isolated tribe carrying a revelation that could transform Christianity forever: evidence of another intelligent species emerging in the forest. As rebellion spreads through the Vatican, Pope Domingo must decide whether these beings belong within God’s creation and moral community. His answer may unite the Church -or tear it apart.
